Sulfates 'should be avoided' by those with sensitive skin

Sulfates 'should be avoided' by those with sensitive skin The new A'kin Pure Baby range is free of parabens and sulfates, as the manufacturers, the Purist Company, claim they are harsh on skin.

Sulfates are commonly found in cleaning products, but also in cleansing and hair care products, and have been found to be an irritant on skin.

There are a number of different forms of sulfates, including sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), which have been found to produce a dry, itchy scalp and dandruff.

Sodium laureth sulfate is commonly used in sulfate-free beauty products and is found to be slightly less irritating to skin, while ammonium lauryl sulfate is often used in SLS-free shampoos, but can still affect some people's skin.

Simon Golding, biochemical engineer and founder of mypure, said: "Those with sensitive skin and/or itchy scalp may benefit from using products which are sulfate-free."

He added that consumers should be wary of sulfate alternatives, as some contain sodium C12-16 olefin sulfonate, which can be more damaging and irritating than sulfates.

Susan Mayou, a dermatologist, recently told the Telegraph that sulfate-free products are less likely to aggravate the skin or create acne and eczema.ADNFCR-2389-ID-19190464-ADNFCR
