A recent survey found that 40% of European cosmetics contained banned chemicals known to cause reproductive damage?

Phthalates are a group of synthetic chemicals that have been linked to reproductive damage. Phthalates are added to cosmetics to impart an oily “moisturizing” film, and help dissolve and fix other ingredients. Sometimes cosmetics that are phthalate free at the time of manufacture get contaminated with phthalates by their packaging.

PVC typically contains 30-40% phthalate, some of which leaches from the PVC bottle and into the bottle’s cosmetic contents. In Europe two chemicals in the phthalate family have already been banned from use in cosmetics. In November 2002 The Swedish Society for Nature Conservation tested 34 well known European cosmetics for phthalates. 80% were found to contain phthalates, and 40% were found to contain banned phthalates. None of the products listed phthalates on their ingredient list. Read the rest of this report. (250k pdf).
