Argan Oil - North Africa's best kept beauty secret

The Daily Telegraph recently reported on argan oil which may interest fans of natural skin care.   For centuries argan oil has been a well-kept secret known only to the Berber women of north Africa who use it to nourish their skin, hair and nails. They also use it to soothe eczema, acne, psoriasis and to help heal scar tissue.

Argan oil is a totally natural oil which comes from the Argania spinosa tree.  It once covered north Africa and parts of southern Europe but now only 860,000 hectares remain in Morocco and these are declining rapidly. So in 1999 the tree was protected as a Unesco Biosphere Heritage plant.

Argan oil's anti-ageing properties are due to high levels of Vitamin E and saponins, which soften the skin. It can help to reduce wrinkles by restoring the skin's water lipid layer and it also cools and soothes inflammation. Its antioxidant properties help to neutralise free radicals.

Argan oil is increasingly being used in natural skin & hair care products.  Anyone interested in argan oil should consider the French certified organic brand Lovea which features argan oil in many of its products.
