Barefoot Botanicals offers top tips for winter skin health

Barefoot Botanicals offers top tips for winter skin health Winter can be a stressful time for many - the cold weather wreaking havoc with the skin combined with the Christmas rush makes for a trying time for our bodies.

However, natural skin care products can come to the rescue and keep us feeling calm and serene despite the crowds and the below-zero temperatures.

Jonathan Stallick, co-founder of Barefoot Botanicals and a qualified natural practitioner, explained that cold, windy weather increases the loss of moisture from the body and the skin's barrier function can become compromised.

He recommended taking extra essential fatty acids, such as hemp seed and fish oils, as this is a good way of keeping the body's Omega 3,6 and 9 levels up. These are all important for maintaining healthy skin.

Mr Stallick also suggested treating dry, irritated skin patches with the Barefoot Botanicals SOS Rescue Me Face and Body Cream, which contains therapeutic plan oils, special nutrients and vitamins to keep the skin hydrated and healthy-looking.

In addition, he said that a warm bath has great stress-relieving properties to ease away tension after a hard day's work.

"People with eczema often find their dry, irritated skin gets worse in the winter and a milky bath with Omega-rich bath oil will calm both physically and emotionally," he continued.

He also recommended using the Barefoot Botanicals SOS Lifesaver Moisturising Bath Oil as it hydrates and helps to restore and improve the skin's barrier function.

Mr Stallick explained that using natural skin care products are preferable for those with both normal and sensitive complexions.

"Whilst paraffin and petrochemical-based skin products can smother the skin, preventing normal respiration, products with a high percentage of natural and organic ingredients have a living quality which meshes much better with the skin's needs," he said.

Mr Stallick added that plant oils, herbal extracts and essential oils have all been "tried and tested over thousands of years" and found to soothe, calm and moisturise.

This was echoed by Alana Sugar in the official whole foods market blog, Whole Story. She recommended using calming essential oils like lavender chamomile to relieve stress, suggesting that these can either be sniffed straight from the bottle or added to a warm shower or humidifier.

Mr Stallick agreed: "Natural aromatic oils are a world away from the 'air freshener' type fragrances which permeate our lives today."

As another way of relieving stress, Ms Sugar recommended boosting magnesium intake, as this is an "anti-stress mineral".

"Found in nuts, seeds, whole grains and leafy greens, magnesium is known to help promote relaxation and proper nervous system function," she wrote.
