How to work your hair, retro-style

How to work your hair, retro-style Hello fashionistas, and welcome to the 1950s!

This autumn's catwalks have been filled with sexy pencil skirts, elegant high heels, sultry red lips and sophisticated, voluminous 'dos. There's no denying it – retro is back.

Multi-award winning US drama Mad Men has set the fashion world alight. As well as earning accolades for its compelling writing and inspiring performances, the show has re-injected the classic glamour of the 1950s and 60s back into mainstream styling.

Lisa Perkins, co-owner of Perk Up Vintage in Dublin told the Irish Independent: "I've not seen a reaction in fashion quite like the Mad Men effect – it's huge!"

Certainly, women up and down the country are looking to the show's heroines Betty, Joan and Peggy to become their style muses.

While few people can afford to overhaul their entire wardrobe in keeping with the season's trends, everyone can keep up with the retro bandwagon by embracing the hair styles of times gone by.

If you want to channel your inner glamourpuss, then you need volume – and lots of it. Whether it's a beehive or a windswept, playful pony you're after, mirroring the styles of the '50s and '60s means you will need to become best friends with your backcombing brush.

The Telegraph told natural hair care fans that height can be added to beehives with the aid of mesh cushions and hairpieces. These are particularly useful if your locks lack the length to create sleek, stable styles.

If the 'hive isn't your thing, the Sydney Morning Herald suggested that creative stylists experiment by spraying and setting your hair, before sweeping it into "an assortment of victory rolls, quiffs and pin-curls", in order to channel the lavish look of a post-war era icon.

Natural hair colour is also of prime importance to a retro 'do. You can obtain a classic look with honey blondes, traffic-stopping reds or – if you dare to cross over to the dark side – this season's hottest shade: Premium Brunette.

Top colourist Zoe Irwin told Stylist: "Brown hair is definitely having a moment ... [it is] one of the biggest statements this season."

If you're looking to overhaul your hue, try Naturtint Hair Dye Permanent Hair Colour in Mahogany Chestnut Brown for a long-lasting, vibrant colour. Or, if you'd just like to flirt with a new shade, plump for Naturtint Hair Dye's Reflex Semi Permanent Hair Colour in Dark Chestnut Brown.

Team your new look with a patterned midi-skirt, feminine blouse and sexy suede court shoes, and you're good to go – 1950s-style.
