Natural beauty products could face self-regulation from shops

Natural beauty products could face self-regulation from shops The natural beauty market, including name brands, could see some products disappearing if retailers choose to follow the example of one US store.

Whole Foods Market recently unveiled policy changes which dictate that, from June 2011, any organic labelled beauty products stocked by the company must comply with organic regulations set out by the US government, reports Grace Gold for Stylelist.com.

The move, if successful with consumers, could see other retailers adopting similar policies across the globe.

Such measures could prove controversial, facing criticism from manufacturers.

Some critics have already discredited policies of this nature, claiming it is unfair to judge organic food and organic beauty products on the same merits.

However, organic supporters have praised the move. Speaking to Stylelist, Horst Rechelbacher, who makes organically sourced products, said: "The new standard is going to save the organic industry and give it some muscle to grow."

Last week, organic skin care expert Virginia Sole-Smith encouraged women to read mission statements and ingredients lists on so-called natural beauty products to ensure their favourite cosmetics were devoid of nasties.
