Natural skin care for men 'promotes health and wellbeing'
Grooming products are becoming increasingly popular among men, with the likes of David Beckham making it acceptable and even cool to moisturise, exfoliate and scrub up.
Nowadays, many guys are not shy about looking after their appearance and this is reflected in recent figures from research company Mintel, which showed that in 2008, there was a dramatic increase in the number of new personal care products launched for men.
Over 3,600 men's grooming items were launched onto markets around the world last year, the research company found.
Serena Warwick, national account manager at natural skin care firm Living Nature, agrees that recent years have seen the rise of the "metrosexual male", which has made it "both fashionable and acceptable for men to groom".
"This has increased demand for male personal care products and more specifically in the men's natural arena due to changing attitudes of the consumer who are today, becoming increasingly ingredient savvy," she says.
Sarah Silva, founder of organic skin care distributor, Touch My Face, agrees that the natural grooming market is growing as guys not only make the effort to look after their bodies, but also aim to stand out from the crowd.
"I think men more so than women are on the look out for something different, so by choosing a natural or organic range you immediately have something niche," she explains.
Even if guys do not push the envelope by spending on exfoliants or anti-ageing creams, they will go for a special formula in the way of a natural shaving cream, says Ms Warwick.
She suggests that this is particularly important for many men who suffer dryness and irritation as a result of shaving.
The key ingredients in Living Nature's products, such as Harakeke, which is New Zealand's equivalent to Aloe Vera, help to sooth and calm the face.
Ms Warwick also highlights the benefits of Kumerahou - a natural plant cleanser that is unique to New Zealand - which works to "gently lift impurities and ensure a smooth, fresh finish".
"A good moisturiser is key to finish this daily ritual and both Living Nature's Soothing Aftershave Gel or Soothing Moisturiser will cater for all skin types," she adds.
Using natural skin care products can have emotional as well as physical benefits, according to Ms Warwick.
"It's a matter of preference but we also need to consider seriously that in today's lifestyle we are getting busier, more stressed and unwell. We're also getting further away from nature," she explains.
For those guys who are just setting off on the road to better grooming habits, her tip is to stick to the basics to begin with.
"The best thing to do is start simple, perhaps with one or two products that address key concerns," she advises.
"As with all things you need to give it time, immediate results should be a 'feel good factor' with visible results improving with time.
"The average cell turnover of the skin is 28 days, so products will need to be trialled for this time to experience the best results," she concludes.
