Tips on adapting skin regimes to freshen the complexion
Ladies looking to revitalise their skin by refreshing their beauty regime in 2012 may want to consider introducing natural skincare products into their daily routines.
Sally Penford, education manager at the International Dermal Institute, described how some people may notice a change in the effectiveness of their traditional moisturisers and cleansers.
She explained how "skin changes all the time" and so it can be necessary to adapt beauty routines to suit different "skin conditions".
The expert noted that although individuals are born with a skin type, hormone fluctuations can affect whether the face and body feels dry or "glowing" on different days.
According to Ms Penford, if skincare products appear to suit skin and are still helping to give "a great result", then there is no need for women to adapt their regime.
However, those who feel it is time for a change may want to consider taking the specialist's advice and "build up a little toolbox of products that fix those problems for you".
"You can keep your basic regimen - your cleanser, toner and moisturiser might be suited to your skin type - but then over and above that you can throw in a booster or a serum, a mask or an exfoliant that can adapt as your skin changes," Ms Penford stated.
It was noted that as women age they are likely to notice their skin will become dryer and thinner, so having to adapt regimes is something that should be expected.
Ms Penford commented that when it comes to organic skincare products, it is important to check the extent to which the item is derived from natural ingredients.
The experts explained how some so-called organic cosmetics only contain a percentage of extracts that are chemical-free and so they may not be entirely natural.
Ladies were advised that safety is the most important element in selecting a product and so makeup, moisturisers and cleansers should not only provide effective results, but also be made up of ingredients that are not harmful to the body.
One of the latest beauty trends to gather a celebrity following is the use of oils to protect and hydrate the skin.
Ms Penford noted that products which contain natural oils can help to act as a barrier against harsh weather conditions, but claimed simply applying a kitchen-based oil directly onto the face will have little nourishing benefit.
"I would always rather stick with a product that has been specially formulated for the skin. It sort of goes back to the old wives' tales actually, 'if I just smother my skin in oil every night I am going to have fantastic skin' - but it's not really the case," she remarked.
Renee Mann, from the Ayurvedic Practitioners Association, described how oils are a good source of vitamins and have been known to accelerate healing as they are easily absorbed by the skin.
It was suggested that products containing jojoba oil are good for skin conditions such as acne as it is "naturally soothing and has anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial and anti-oxidant properties".
