Festive fare can boost skin health, expert claims

Festive fare can boost skin health, expert claims Christmas foods can help boost natural skincare as many seasonal treats are packed with vitamins and antioxidants.

This is according to an expert from Simple, who described in an interview with the Shropshire Star how to enjoy festive fare and enhance beauty at the same time.

Eating nuts can help improve skin elasticity and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles as they are contain vitamin E and essential fatty acids, according to Simple's skincare nutritionist Fiona Hunter.

Meanwhile, turkey was described as also great for beauty, as it is packed with protein, which is important for the manufacture of collagen.

Ms Hunter explained how this is "the main structural component in the dermis, one of the lower layers of the skin and essential for keeping the skin toned and supple".

According to the expert, a 100g serving of turkey contains almost 75 per cent of an adult's recommended daily amount of protein.

Another recommendation included carrots, as they are rich in beta carotene, which the body converts into vitamin A for the manufacture of new skin cells.

Ladies may also want to pile their sprouts high, as although the vegetable is notoriously unpopular with Christmas day diners, they contain high levels of vitamin C, which helps stimulate collagen growth.

For an after-dinner sweet treat with beauty benefits, Ms Hunter urged people to "satisfy your cravings with dark chocolate".

Unlike other forms of the snack, this contains phytochemicals that help protect the skin from damage by free radicals and thus the development of wrinkles.

For a healthier alternative, superfoods such as cranberries and pomegranates were recommended by the expert as being packed with antioxidants that prevent thread veins by strengthening the walls of blood vessels.

The Nutrition Society's Dr Sarah Schenker recently advised individuals to eat plenty of foods that are rich in beta carotene and vitamin C.
