Phthalate products 'can weaken bones'
Fans of natural skin care products will be interested to know about a piece of research that has found synthetics like phthalates can destroy bones.
The study, which was published in the Journal of Cellular Biochemistry, showed that in animal tests phthalate products softened and weakened bones.
Researchers stated: "Phthalates used in plastics and beauty products can trigger bone cell death, finds this animal study. Phthalates provoke DNA damage that can lead to bone cell death."
Phthalates can be found in a whole host of household items and health care products, such as shampoos, nail polishes and deodorants.
Researchers exposed newborn mice to very low levels of two common types of phthalate and after 24 hours bone development had been interrupted.
The study highlights the benefit phthalate free can have on skin, with natural products not containing any of the chemicals which cause bone weakening.
A pressure group has recently called on all phthalate laced toys to be removed from circulation after concerns the chemicals could interfere with reproduction in later life.
