Tea and coffee 'can help to prevent diabetes'

Tea and coffee 'can help to prevent diabetes' Tea and coffee could help to prevent people getting type-2 diabetes, even if they drink decaffeinated varieties.

Research from the University of Sydney looked at 18 separate studies, finding that people who drink three or four cups of coffee and tea can cut their risk of getting the disease by five per cent.

In addition, it found that for each cup of coffee drunk a day, the chance of getting diabetes was cut by seven per cent.

As the effect is still the same when decaffeinated coffee and tea is drunk, Dr Rachel Huxley, from the University of Sydney, said that it could be due to magnesium and antioxidants known as lignans or chlorogenic acidsco.

She added: "The identification of the active components of these beverages would open up new therapeutic pathways for the primary prevention of diabetes mellitus."

Other natural food research also discovered that pistachio nuts can help to lower the risk of lung cancer, as they contain high levels of gamma-tocopherol.
