Tips on new year detoxing

Tips on new year detoxing As the new year gets underway many people are likely to be considering starting a detox after overindulging during the festive period.

While reassessing lifestyles and introducing better diets can be a good way to kick-start a healthy 2012, one expert has warned individuals to take this approach sensibly.

Nutritional therapist, author and founder of de-stressyourlife.com Charlotte Watts explained how it is important to detox step by step.

Firstly, Ms Watts recommended cutting back on the amount of sugar consumed, so that blood-sugar levels can rebalance.

"I would start doing that by ... making sure you have protein at each meal, plenty of vegetables and using that to naturally pull back on the sugar," the specialist commented.

She urged people to increase their intake of superfoods that help the body to flush out toxins and promote healthy liver function.

"You really need to start eating foods like cruciferous vegetables - broccoli, cabbage, even pak choi," Ms Watts claimed, adding that raspberry, turmeric, green tea, onions and garlic also help the detoxification process.

Ms Watts described how foods that contain sulphur, such as beans, watercress, fennel and eggs, can help ensure diets are nutritionally balanced.

Approaching detoxification with care is said to be important as being too strict can lead to people finding their liver function "isn't optimal" if they start the process too quickly.

The expert explained how the liver "pathways" are not set up for the "toxic backlog" that spreads through the bloodstream if individuals crash diet.

This is what makes people feel unwell when detoxing and is a sign the body is struggling to deal with the toxins.

Registered nutritionist Dr Carina Norris recently warned that many Brits are consuming more sugar and salt than they need and this could be doing long-term damage to their health.
