Try herbal teas to combat morning sickness
Ladies suffering from chronic morning sickness may want to look into combining herbal teas with their superfoods for a healthy and natural way to combat pregnancy side effects.
Midwife and expert in maternity complementary medicine Denise Tiran described how teas made with extracts of ginger, peppermint and camomile can be soothing on the stomach.
Women who are in good health throughout their pregnancy were encouraged to sample ginger tea made from grated root of the herb, as it can ease morning sickness without overloading the body with sugars that are found in biscuits.
However, ladies with blood clotting issues, or who are prone to bleeding, were advised to steer clear of the drink as it has blood-thinning properties.
"The other problem is that sometimes the ginger doesn't work, it sometimes makes things worse," Ms Tiran noted.
In cases where the taste of the tea makes individuals feel sicklier than before, the specialist recommended trying peppermint drinks instead.
Camomile teas were also suggested as good at helping to alleviate the symptoms of morning sickness, but ladies were warned not to consume too much.
"Most people know it helps you go to sleep, but actually if you drink too much it will keep you awake," Ms Tiran explained.
Another option recommended for pregnant women who are prone to bouts of sickness is to consider taking slippery elm tablets that are available in health food shops.
Ms Tiran commented that while they "won't help with everybody", they may make some ladies feel better.
Those who suffer from unusual cravings during their pregnancy were recently encouraged to seek professional advice.
Sarah Montagu, admin secretary for the Association of Radical Midwives, described how the urge to consume strange products can be a sign of a nutritional deficiency.
For example cravings for wall plaster can reflect a lack of calcium in a person's diet.
