Unnatural food is 'too ambiguous'
Foods which offer amazing health benefits while containing unnatural ingredients are nothing more than 'fortified junk food', according to one expert.
Misty Harris, the health correspondent for The Vancouver Sun, made the comments in an article and also said that some food companies are trying to trade a 'slap on the wrist with a pat on the back' as they market unhealthy foods as being good for you.
She said: "Supermarkets might be mistaken for pharmacies or at the very least their natural health products sections are proving increasingly problematic as regulators in Canada and the US struggle to determine where foods ends and drugs begin."
The writer is referring to foods like Cheerio's, which the US Food and Drug Administration recently defined as a drug because health claims on the packaging imply the breakfast cereal can be used to prevent illness.
Ms Harris also criticised the authorities which regulate the so called 'functional food' market saying that it can take up to a decade to get new products approved.
In other natural food news, the Independent's diet and fitness correspondent Eilish O'Regan recommended eating salmon, dark green vegetables and nuts if you want to maintain healthy looking hair.
