Yorkshire rhubarb can help fight cancer cells
New research has found that cooked Yorkshire rhubarb can help cancer patients, having tumour-killing chemicals.
The findings from Sheffield Hallam University stated that polyphenols in the rhubarb can kill or prevent growth of cancer cells.
However, the concentration of these chemicals is increased with 20 minutes of cooking.
The researchers think that the findings could be used to create less harmful medications for cancer patients.
Dr Nikki Jordan-Mahy, of Sheffield Hallam University's Biomedical Research Centre, said: "Rhubarb has been shown to have some very interesting polyphenols that have anti-cancerous properties. Eating a nice crumble will be good for you."
She added that resistance and toxicity are problems with current treatments which could be overcome with this remedy.
The findings follow the arrival of the aronia berry on British shelves, which is said to have three times more antioxidants than blueberries and can help to guard against cancer.
