Natural body care: Out-of-date products are a health risk
Women who use out-of-date makeup are risking their health, according to one expert who said that, like food, cosmetics can become dangerous to use.
Beauty analyst Alexandra Richmond told the Daily Mail that some women are putting their health at risk because they simply forget when they purchased a product and do not take notice of the use-by date.
She said: "It is not simply a matter of products no longer performing to optimal standards. Old makeup can be hazardous to our health."
Ms Richmond added that exposure to bacteria from the mouth can affect some lip cosmetics, like lipstick and out-of-date mascara can cause eye infections.
Research by Mintel recently showed that many women ignore use-by dates on products like mascara and continue to use them beyond their six-month lifespan.
A team of French researchers from the University of Angers and the Institute of Research and Development in Montpellier recently reported that the deet chemical used in some insect repellents could be potentially toxic.
