Organic and natural skin care products 'are better for you'
People need to pay attention to what they are putting onto their skin, according to one health association, which said consumers also need to read labels to find out exactly what products they are buying.
The Soil Association said that there has been an increase in the number of companies making organic and natural skin care products, but as there is no legal standard of what constitutes an organic product, consumers could be duped into buying unnatural cosmetics.
It stated: "Your skin is the largest organ of your body and what you put on it can be absorbed in tiny amounts. The impact from the daily cocktail of substances that we put on the skin is only just beginning to be understood."
The association proposed that all organic products should abide by its criteria, which includes making maximum use of natural ingredients, providing clear labelling and submitting a declaration if any non-organic products are used.
Camille Kruse, a health and beauty correspondent for Examiner.com, recently said that consumers need to arm themselves with information so they do not get fooled by bogus products which claim to be organic when they are not.
