Popular sunscreen ingredient linked to cancer

Fans of organic sunscreen may be interested to read some recent news from the United States about the safety of chemical based sunscreens.

In May 2010 the Environmental Working Group reported the results of a year long study which found that a common sunscreen ingredient called retinal palmitate caused tumours and lesions to develop 21% faster in lab animals.

As a result the battle over whether many sunscreens increase rather than prevent skin cancer is heating up as the American government weighs in.

Senator Charles Schumer, told the Food and Drug Administration: "With the recent reports suggesting a possible link between skin cancer and a common chemical found in sunscreens, the FDA must act now to protect consumers.  When it comes to the health and safety of the public, there is no room for delay."

Almost half of the 500 most popular sunscreens contain retinal palmitate.  However, all the natural & organic sunscreens sold by mypure are free from this ingredient.
