Products 'can confuse ethical shoppers'

Products 'can confuse ethical shoppers' Consumers who want to make ethical choices when buying products like makeup are getting confused by advertising campaigns, according to the editor of a magazine.

Katie Keegan, editor of Ethical Pulse, said that the most switched-on consumers do not have a problem making choices but less well-informed buyers do often run into ethical problems.

People considering using organic skin care products may be interested by Ms Keegan's comments, as she said more people should research the products they purchase before parting with their money.

She said: "Some consumers have a high level of knowledge concerning the product capability, whether that applies to the social impact of the product, animal welfare concerns or protection of the environment."

Ms Keegan added that some consumers have a lack of knowledge and said manipulation in advertising and the greenwashing of certain products to make them look eco-friendly is a big problem.

The greenwashing of products posing as natural skin care products is on the rise in the US and was even raised as a problem at the House of Representatives recently.
