Sunshine might be fine, says report

Sunshine might be fine, says report Fans of natural skin care may be interested to hear new research which says that sunshine might not be the main cause of skin cancer.

An international team of researchers led by King's College London published findings from a study in the Nature Genetics journal which said that the number of moles on a person's skin could determine how likely they are to get melanoma.

Malignant melanoma accounts for around 1,500 deaths in the UK each year and the new research suggests that only a small proportion of cases were caused by sun exposure.

Tim Spector, professor of genetic epidemiology at King's College London, said: "This paper shows that we found two important genes that control the number of moles you have. Those genes also give you an extra risk of melanoma."

British people are more likely to get skin cancer than their Australian counterparts because they fail to cover up in the summer months, according to the Daily Mail.
