Women invest in makeup to brighten recession blues

Women invest in makeup to brighten recession blues Despite the gloomy economic climate, British women carry products worth an average of £57 with them in their makeup bags, according to a new study.

Around £1.1 billion is spent on cosmetics every month, as the so called 'lipstick effect' tempts women to boost their morale by investing in natural beauty products.

The study by Avon showed that mascara was the most popular product, with 62 per cent of women considering it essential and 37 per cent saying lipstick was a must have item.

Cary Cooper, professor of psychology and health at Lancaster University, said: "Women who feel low want to look better - they go for a haircut, have their nails done or buy new makeup. It's a common phenomenon."

The news may be of interest to those considering natural skin care products and the study also revealed that women aged 25 to 34 carry the most expensive products, with an average of £71 worth being found in their handbags.

In other news, British sunbathers need to cover up and look after their skin if they want to achieve natural beauty, according to the Telegraph.
