Most mascara contains coal tar, expert claims

Most mascara contains coal tar, expert claims Ladies considering switching their makeup to natural cosmetics may be more inclined to do so after hearing what ingredients go into most mascara.

Writing for the Ecologist, Ruth Styles described how the product contains a host of chemicals and preservatives that could be harmful to humans.

"Beauty products, makeup in particular, have long attracted criticism for their reliance on chemical preservatives, synthetic pigmentation and use of crude oil by-products," she commented.

For example, the black colour in most mascara is said to be derived from partially burnt petroleum derivatives such as coal tar.

Meanwhile, synthetic polyamides makeup the nylon and rayon microfibers that are used as lengthening blends, Ms Styles claimed.

She added that the chemical compound methyl cellulose is also include, which is required in order to give mascara a stiffening affect.

Stephanie Thomas of the Berkley Beacon recently described how many individuals use products without knowing what ingredients they contain.
