Natural skin care: Beauty products 'thrive in downturn'
Natural beauty products are doing well during the recession, with more shoppers choosing to spend money on cosmetics rather than trips abroad, fancy restaurants and luxury goods, according to one expert.
Vivienne Rudd, editor of Cosmetics International, a leading global beauty news publication, said that buying beauty products is seen as a guilt-free purchase by UK consumers.
She said: "Things that are easy impulse purchases, like make-up, are doing well. Partly because I think women like a little pick-me-up,"
Women also want to present a professional and attractive image if they are worried about their job, according to the expert.
L'Oreal recently released a report which showed that there is a prevalent 'lipstick effect', which means women are using cosmetics to cheer themselves up during the downturn.
The effect was also looked at in a recent study by Lancaster University which found it is common for women to spend money on beauty products during the economic dip in order to feel better about themselves.
