Thorough cleansing 'helps beat spots'
Using oil-free cleanser has been recommended as one way to help prevent spot outbreaks.
Creator of GoodThingsBeauty.com Alice Hart-Davis described how there are many things that can trigger an eruption of acne.
She explained that thorough cleansing each evening to remove dirt, sweat, bacteria and makeup is vital so pores do not get clogged up.
In addition, Ms Hart-Davies advised women to steer clear of creamy or oily products as these can "provoke the skin into erupting".
Other factors noted as potentially causing flare-ups include high levels of stress, which can trigger the hormone cortisol and prompt breakouts.
"If you are under continued stress and particularly if you consume too much caffeine, your body produces more cortisol," Ms Hart-Davis remarked.
Her comments come after dermatologists at Nantes University Hospital found around half of women have problems with spots in adult life, even if they never had acne as a teenager.
