Natural beauty food: Spices could limit stem cell growth
Fans of organic skin care who want to limit their chances of developing breast cancer should eat foods with turmeric and pepper in them, according to new research.
A group at the University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center found that compounds made from the spices can reduce the growth of stem cells, which fuel the development of cancerous tumours.
Lead author of the research Madhuri Kakarala, who is also a clinical lecturer in internal medicine, said: "If we can limit the number of stem cells, we can limit the number of cells with potential to form tumours."
The researchers believe that controlling stem cells is a key part of the fight against the disease and say the findings could decrease the risk of cancer.
Emma Hockridge, policy manager for The Soil Association, recently said that the organisation is campaigning for clearer labelling of produce because people want transparency from food companies.
