Natural fake tan: Sunbed salons to be fined for under-age use
Natural fake tan sales will likely soar in the coming months, as new legislation has been introduced to regulate the use of sunbeds by people under the age of 18.
The Sunbeds (Regulation) Act 2010 came into force today and bans teenagers from using tanning equipment that is located in dedicated salons, as well as other sites such as leisure centres and hotels.
Commenting on the legislation, public health minister Anne Milton said: "This new law will go some way to help reduce one of the biggest cancers among 15 to 24-year-olds. We want to protect under-18s from the dangers of sunbeds and reduce the number of young people getting skin cancer."
Earlier this week, Cancer Research released figures that showed the rates of malignant melanoma in those aged under 35 have soared from the 1970s onwards, highlighting the importance of restricting sunbed use, applying natural sunblock when outside and taking preventative action to avoid burning.
