Organic sunscreen 'as effective as non-organic'
It is a myth that organic sunscreens are not as effective as chemical ones, one expert states.
Scientist Dr Chris Flower said people should not shy away from the products as they are equally as effective as other screens, meaning more people may buy organic skin care items.
"Organic UV filters can get a bad press because they are sometimes called 'chemical sunscreens' but all cosmetic products are required by law to be safe and sunscreens containing organic UV filters are no exception," he added.
Another myth dispelled by experts is that people only need to put cream on when they are in the sun, with Sally Penford, education manager at the International Dermal Institute, saying even short bursts outside can lead to ageing of the skin.
She stated that occasional 20-minute walks in the sun can build up and have a detrimental effect.
Dermatologist Dr Nick Lowe says people with fair skin or a family history of skin cancer should use SPF 15 in their natural skin care products, adding that they should increase this to SPF 30 in sunny weather.
Meanwhile, parents of children under the age of six months should bear in mind they are more likely to burn and use sunscreen sparingly on small parts of their bodies, according to BabyChums.
